Box City raises awareness about the many homeless families in our own community, and raises money to support Family Promise of SCV. Participants set a goal to raise $100 in pledges and contributions and sleep overnight in a cardboard box “home” as a resident of Box City. During the course of the event there will be bands, activities, entertainment, and free food for participants.

Box City is open to people of all ages and affiliations. We encourage youth groups, service organizations, school service clubs, community groups, sports teams, Boy and Girl Scouts, etc., to use this event as a community service and learning project. The activities and entertainment are geared toward families, and participants will sleep outdoors in a secure area. A minimum of one adult (age 21 or over) per each seven youth under the age of 18 participating in Box City is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Box City?

It is a fun and meaningful annual event in which people camp for the night in a temporary dwelling to increase awareness of the many homeless families in our own community, and raise money to support Family Promise of Santa Clarita Valley.

Who can participate?

Anyone interested—youth groups, school or community clubs, sports teams, civic organizations, churches and families. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or chaperone.

How do I sign up?

Register to become a resident of Box City by signing up online; then pay the $25 registration fee and set a goal to raise $100 ($200 goal for families) in pledges or contributions. Those who raise $100 will receive a free Box City t-shirt. In the past, our participants have achieved great success by inviting friends and neighbors to participate with a small donation. It’s amazing how fast those small donations add up to make a huge difference for homeless kids and families!

What is the deadline?

Deadline for registration and pledges is September 10, 2014. Late registration and pledges will be accepted the night of the event.

How do I raise the goal amount of $100 (individual) or $200 (family)?

The easiest fundraising method is collecting donations by writing a quick email (or posting via Facebook) to friends and neighbors and asking for a small online donation (see our sample letter below). Register online and set up your own personal donation page by clicking here. Our past participants have also achieved great success by organizing a fundraising event such as a car wash or bake sale.

Dear Friends and Family,

I'm currently working as a volunteer for Family Promise of Santa Clarita Valley, and have been quite impressed with the way people from our many local churches and temples have come together to help homeless families in our community.

Each year, we host a citywide fundraising event entitled Box City. This year, on the night of September 29th, I will be participating in this event by sleeping overnight in a cardboard box in Bridgeport Park to see what homelessness really feels like. I will be collecting pledges via my online donor page, and would really appreciate any small gift you or your family could make to this great cause. It's truly shocking that we have so many homeless families in a city like Santa Clarita, but sadly, it’s a reality.

My goal for this year is to raise over $100. I have already received a small donation, and have just begun to reach out to those closest to me. I believe with your help, I can raise even more than my goal amount, and continue to help Family Promise reach new levels.

I truly appreciate your support! If you are able to give, just click on the link below to access my donation page and make a pledge:

Thank you so much for your help,
Jane Doe

What can I bring to the event?

Being mindful of the provisions available to the homeless, limit yourself to your decorated box or dwelling, a sleeping bag or pad, tarp, pillow, warm clothes and a refillable water bottle. You may bring a cell phone, medications and essential toiletries, but please do not bring: alcoholic beverages, drugs, weapons of any kind, beverages in glass bottles or electronic items other than cell phones. Chaperones will have cell phones in case of emergency. If you have a special need, please contact us.

What about food?

A modest homeless shelter-style meal and light breakfast will be provided. Your pledges/contributions cover the cost of the meals. Please feel free to bring snacks to share.

What about safety?

We require all groups to have one adult chaperone (21 years or older) for every seven (7) participants under the age of 18. There will be designated sleeping areas for boys, girls, and families. The Box City area will be cordoned off and we will have volunteer staff keeping watch throughout the night.

What if it rains?

Just as the homeless do, we will cope with the weather we are given. Unless there is a safety risk to residents, the event will continue rain or shine.

Must I sleep in a box?

While sleeping in a cardboard box can provide a valuable lesson in empathy, we understand that for health or personal reasons you may not be able to. You may still participate as a “virtual resident” (raise funds, but sleep at home). Virtual residents are welcome to attend evening activities. Visitors are also welcome and encouraged to check out Box City and enjoy the programming. Visitors will be asked to leave at lights out.

Will there be activities?

The evening will include entertainment, such as a cardboard box decorating contest, games, bands and special music, and other activities. Periods of unstructured time will be available for groups to lead their own activities, if desired.

When is it taking place?

REGISTRATION/SET UP: 3:00 pm, Saturday, September 27th
EVENT ENDS: 9:00 am, Sunday, September 28th
